Update sent to partners on 2 June 2020

Dear partner,

We are now able to write to let you know about our plans for welcoming new undergraduate students to Cardiff University in September.

Our plan is to open our campus in September 2020 and we are working to make the campus and our student accommodation meet government guidelines. We are putting the safety and wellbeing of students first, whilst also considering how best to support their study next year.

Study and learning

We know that one of the reasons our students choose Cardiff is the on-campus experience, from face-to-face teaching to excellent student support. We want to reassure you that we are committed to delivering this experience. We are planning for all students joining us in September to spend time on campus. We have health and safety at the centre of every decision we make and so it is also necessary to look at new and innovative ways to deliver the Cardiff University experience.

Where social distancing requirements can be met, we aim to deliver classes on campus. This is likely to take the form of small-group teaching such as tutorials or clinical, studio and laboratory sessions. Large lectures will not take place on campus but will take the form of high-quality enhanced online learning activities.

Digital learning will provide students with the opportunity to access elements of information and learning resources at a time and place that best suits them. While our academic staff are determined to ensure students receive personal engagement and contact during their time with us.

Accommodation and living in Cardiff

Your students should continue to apply for University accommodation as planned. Our residences team are working to facilitate social distancing and ensure everyone’s health and safety while in student accommodation. You will receive more information about this in a future email.

We know that life in Cardiff is one aspect that is important for our students and we work closely in partnership with Cardiff Council to ensure a positive experience. You can find out more about what is happening in and around Cardiff in readiness for re-opening the city centre. Cardiff is a compact city with many green spaces: as the majority of our accommodation and University buildings are only a short walk away, students will benefit from the increased space the Council is creating for pedestrians and cyclists without the need to rely on public transport.

We are here to support

We hope this update reassures you and your students that we are committed to giving the highest quality student experience, and that any changes we do make will be designed to enhance the learning experience, while protecting students’ health and wellbeing.

We know you and your students may have more questions, particularly around what our plans are for Postgraduate students; we therefore plan to send you a series of communications to update you on the our plans for September in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, please check our Coronavirus advice for prospective students. If you have any immediate questions, please contact us at international@cardiff.ac.uk.

We will be in touch again soon.

Stay safe,

Claire Morgan
