Focus on … Big Data
Big Data is a fast-evolving science requiring a dynamic skillset, involving problem solving across multiple sectors; from investment banking to healthcare, IT to gas and oil, and education to insurance. Big data specialists are highly sought after and command high salaries, but the skills needed are in short supply across the globe.
Cardiff University has responded to this need by developing new postgraduate Master’s degrees in the fields of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, each designed to maximise the prospects of our graduates.
MSc Data Science & Analytics
An MSc degree for those looking to equip themselves with a range of in-demand skills for extracting and handling ‘big data’, discovering meaningful patterns from data and applying modelling tools to help businesses and government organisations make better decisions.
Students develop data handling and extraction skills, programming skills, machine learning and informatics skills, and problem solving and modelling skills. Case studies and project work provide the opportunity to put skills into practice and valuable experience of working in the field. The dissertation project, typically undertaken with an industrial partner, allows students to work with complex data in a creative manner and a problem-solving environment.
MSc Data Intensive Physics/Astrophysics
Combining data analysis and computational techniques with a core science discipline, this course is delivered by members of our Data Innovation Research Institute, which was established to conduct research into the aspects of managing, analysing and interpreting massive volumes of textual and numerical information.
A key component is a 3 month summer project, which will be based either in our School of Physics and Astronomy, or with one or more of our external partners. The project will focus on the application of modern data science methodologies to a problem in Astrophysics, whilst providing the hands-on experience needed to succeed in the dynamic field of Data-Intensive Physics as well as wider aspects of data science.

MSc Genetic and Genomic Counselling
The School of Medicine are delighted to announce a new 3-year, part-time, largely distance learning MSc in Genetic and Genomic Counselling, which will commence in September 2017.
The MSc in Genetic and Genomic Counselling is an innovative part-time, largely distance learning course. Being a ‘blended learning’ course, this opens up our well established genetic counsellor training expertise to a European and international audience, as it removes the need for students to relocate to Cardiff for full time study to train as a genetic counsellor. The course is accredited by both the UK Genetic Counsellor Registration Board and by the European Board of Medical Genetics.
In addition to the part-time distance learning MSc Psychiatry programme already offered, the School of Medicine are pleased to announce a new full-time distance learning MSc Psychiatry programme.
Students can now study the MSc Psychiatry in one year (full time) or part-time over three years. It covers all aspects of psychiatry with an emphasis on evidence based clinical practice. The programme is suitable for Psychiatric Clinical Trainees, Medical Practitioners, Psychologists, Healthcare Professionals, and Biomedical Scientists.
Important Information for Applicants!
Please ensure that the students personal email address is included when their applications are submitted to Cardiff University. This is particularly important as students need to have a unique email address in order to apply for University Accommodation.
